About Cycle Maps

Cycle Maps is an Android app that finds cycling routes and mountain-bike trails near any spot on the map. This website is its home.

Who makes it

Cycle Maps makes the app and this website, and publishes the app on Google Play under the same name. It has no connection with other apps of similar names, and is not part of OpenStreetMap or Waymarked Trails.

Where the routes come from

Every route and trail the app and this website show is mapped in OpenStreetMap, the map of the world that volunteers build and anyone may use under its open licence. Cycle Maps does not edit those routes.

It finds them through Waymarked Trails, a separate service that collects the cycling and mountain-bike routes mapped in OpenStreetMap. When you look for routes, Cycle Maps asks Waymarked Trails for the ones around that place.

A route with a wrong name or a wrong line is fixed in OpenStreetMap, where anyone can edit it. Once Waymarked Trails has the fix, the app shows it within 7 days, and the city pages within 30 days.

The map

The app's map comes from OpenFreeMap, drawn from OpenStreetMap data with OpenMapTiles. The maps on this website's city pages are OpenStreetMap's own.

Its names

On a phone set to Spanish the app is called Bici, in French Cartes de vélo, and in Korean 사이클. Everywhere else it is Cycle Maps, and so is this website, whose home page is in English, Spanish, French, Korean and German.
